A Twirl if You Will!

Today I’ll show you Pandora in her little skirt!

The first time I went to Ottawa’s Doll Club “All Dolled Up” the artist Liz Ciesluk was showing us some of her work and she was praising this product called “Paverpol”.

Now, I had never head of this before, but I managed to find a place here in Ottawa that sells it and finally yesterday I got to play.

Marilyn did tell me that it would be messy – oh boy, was she ever right … this stuff gets everywhere!

I have played a lot with papier-mache and I love it – this paverpol kind of does the same – though I have to say that personally I’d rather have wall paper paste on my hands than this paverpol stuff.

It is basically a really heavy white glue and it feels like that and it smells like that – and the result is a piece that sets very hard!

I managed to get a piece of paper that had french postcards all over it – and even better it had a bit of brown and green in it which is (obviously!) the colour scheme I’ve chosen for Pandora!

I didn’t particularly like the green but I knew that Marilyn would ask me to crackle and age it so I figured the green would be toned down a bit!

I put the skirt on her with the help of foil and I kept going back and forth – this morning it was set and rock hard … I must say – I think she’s ready for a twirl!

Here’s a picture of her with her skirt – before I “aged” it.

And then I crackled and I aged and I sponged it with some gold paint.

Once that was done the green had indeed toned down a bit – and then I put on some trim.

I have to say, I really REALLY like when trim is put on things. Anything. Because I hate rough edges, I am a very impatient girl and I struggle until I can see that it is actually going to be a beautiful piece. I am lucky because I have seen the whole lesson for this piece and I have a pretty good idea of what she’ll look like at the end, however, there are moments when I worry that I won’t like her as much as I should!

… and then I put on the trim … and then I feel like I should be the one twirling with joy!

Cloth doll – Lesson 3

This is where we start today.

She definitely needs some clothes now doesn’t she?  She is like … cold, don’t you think?

Ok – for all my new readers – here is lesson 1

… and this was last weeks lesson 2.

I really thought we’d get round to dressing her last week but nope – that will have to be today!

So let’s hop to is shall we?

Lesson 3 … here we go!

let’s start with some nice “underwear” – pantalets I believe Barbara calls them – whatever the name I think they are fab – and I’d be quite happy to have a pair myself!

see how it says there on the paper cut-out … “position on fold” – so I folded the fabric and placed it right there on the fold, drew around it with my magic purple pen and cut out two legs. Once cut, I “unfolded” and “voila” … there is one leg – not that it makes any sense when you look at it like this, right?

I always get so confused when I see it like this – because how is that ever going to make trousers??

Well, with two of them cut and ready for sewing – THIS is how they make trousers!

First, lay the two pieces you just cut out on top of each other, wrong sides together – then stitch on the curve … one side … then the other …

… starting to look like trousers already right?

-  and then you just sew them on the “inside” leg.

That really is it – but remember to turn them inside out!

Once you have done that you need to stitch them at the top of the trousers and the bottom of each leg – for you to have something to pull on and tie together!

(Mr. Hubby thought he’d take a photo while I was stitching … he needs to learn about zooming :) )

after stitching top and bottom …

- this is what you end up with!

Yipee – finally time to get some clothes on my lovely Jolie!

Please take a moment here with me – I mean … how cute is she right now … there is a big part of me that just want to stop right here!

I want to pick her up and do a bit of “Rock-a-bye Baby” … ok – that might be going to far – but still, between the tights and these pantalettes … I’m squealing!!

Ok … breathe in … breathe out …

… and on to the skirt!

Now, Barbara – her pattern tells you to cut a big strip of fabric and stitch it together.

This is probably where I should let you know … I kind of thought I could do my own bit, but of course still leaning on Barbara’s pattern and ideas.

I went quite a lot shorter than the pattern asked for.

which was REALLY silly – and probably the reason why Barbara is the author and I’m the one supposed to follow the pattern – funny how she knows best!!

(It was just that I really liked those pantalets and wanted to be able to see them – didn’t work though!)

… so once I sort of tried the shorter skirt on Jolie – it was waaaay too short!

and then I had a “what to do – what to do”-moment

so I found some lace – and sewed it onto the skirt …

but that didn’t really do anything to the length of the skirt (I knew that … just in case you didn’t :) )

and then I added some black silk … mm … I just love this silk!

Let’s see what that looks like …

and then … some trim …

and NOW it is long enough!

All I had to do then was to stitch it at the top so I could pull it in …

Obviously I needed to call in my helpers here!

That is one BIG skirt for one tiny waist!

Let’s try it on Jolie shall we?

Wait … let’s just have a look under that skirt first – before I show you Jolie sitting pretty …

- because I put a few different kind of ribbons at the end of the pantalets – sort of in her knee creases

see

Ok … ready to see the fancy – longer – skirt on Miss Jolie?

Here we go!

Looking good isn’t she!

… and that is as far as we’ll get today …

(notice how Miss Kitchy just doesn’t get anything done to her … oh well … some day … )

I still want to hold her close and do some “Rock-a-bye Baby” … I really REALLY like how Jolie is coming along!

You?
