I really DID make him do that …

” All Dolled Up” … that is the name of the Ottawa Doll Group – full of very talented doll makers – they always send out an electronic monthly news letter.

I was asked if I’d like to be the profile for April – and if I could kindly write it by March 15th? …  I jumped on the chance and said “yes – thank you and please”.

Well, have you ever done that?

Written a profile about yourself?

I find it hard – I find it hard when I have to write three sentences about myself on Facebook – let alone a whole piece to be read by all these amazing artists.

So I procrastinated – again!

But Sunday morning, I woke up and thought – today is the day (let me just point out – well within the time-limit!)

So I sat down – pen in hand (read: computer in lap) and within a fairly short amount of time I had written a pretty long piece.

And I got an email back saying it was a really nice piece – fun, cheerful and happy.

Which in turn made me happy!

Which then made me think  ”maybe I should share some of it with my readers” – like this funny little tidbit!

“For some strange reason – I still haven’t found a way to relay this story without a bit of embarrassment sneaking in – one weekend way before we were parents I said to my husband “let’s make some salt dough – just in case we have children one day. We must know how to do salt dough” … now, granted I have a very kind and supportive husband but it only took about an hour before he threw in the towel. “

Seriously I made Mr. Hubby do that – we had a West Highland White terrier at the time and he tried to make her on a magnet for our fridge … bless … let’s just say – it never made it to the fridge.

Another little tidbit …

“ …  when I had my twins – and they turned three years old, we were living in the UK.  Cake decoration using Fondant is big over there. I was intrigued and loved the idea of colorful fun cakes.

So I made their third birthday cake and I’m not going to lie -  it was a disaster.”

I’m telling you … it was a boat – the one there in the right hand upper corner.

I mean – first of – look at the title “50 EASY Party Cakes” – so how hard could it be?

It was a disaster – it really really was!

and I’m happy to say that there is only on photo in existence – and it is only showing half the cake, sort of hidden behind the presents on the birthday table …

But I persevered and made some fantastic cakes – like this one – I mean this one is not bad … right?

What else did I put in my profile?

Oh yes – there was this bit about how I have been doing the lessons on Jolie and this particular sentence …

“I finished her yesterday – but the blog readers don’t know that and won’t for a few weeks – but I thought you should have a look-see”

This means that there are people out there who has seen her before you …

- sorry about that :)

Jolie – lesson 1

Here we go …

My very first ever Cloth Doll – and I tell you … this is fun.

She is already such a part of the family and being loved by all of us – and she doesn’t even have a head yet – how crazy is that!

Let me set the scene for you – you kind of need to know where she’s being created

I promise you I emptied the bin before I started – oh and also picked up the piece of paper on the floor … tsk tsk

- also notice how little “Miss Kitchy” is sitting perched on her broom able to check out everything that is about to happen!

Okay, let me remind you what we are aiming for

Jolie

Trust me – my doll won’t look anything like this – and I do not say that because I don’t like the look of Jolie – I say that because my fabrics are very different and also, I think mine will end up looking a little less “Historical” and a bit more … oh well, I don’t know – let’s see where it ends shall we?

So now you know where I work – let’s get started!

I started by actually running off to get the pattern copied onto cardboard at the copy shop and then cut out all the bits and bobs – not too many actually but nevertheless it had to be done. I kind of enjoyed that – I like cutting paper and shapes.

Here are some of the cutouts on my black silk – ooh nice silk!

So me being me … well, when I looked at Jolie I was a bit unhappy with the way she has this doily thingy on her neck – I would prefer to keep her neck free of “stuff” so I decided that instead of making the torso all black I made it skin tone and black

Barbara (Willis) tells you to trace the pattern cutouts straight onto the fabric and then sew on the traced line – and when you then cut it after, you must add the seam allowance – and working with silk you must add quite a bit … now I know that I should be measuring this properly but this is where I’m a lazy artist and I just do … and so far it’s worked so “touch wood” it will continue to do so!

Barbara says “no curves” when you do the cutout … as you can tell I was a little unsure on this one so I did one of each …

… and once I turned it I couldn’t really tell the diff – I’m thinking it has to do with the silk fraying like mad!

Looks pretty good though … right?

Okay, onto the legs … I tell you – I fell head over heals in love with these legs – just divine they are!

again … sew ON the lines

Oh well … you can’t tell once it is turned – I dare you :)

and then the turning – with my new turning tools – ooh la la … had Miss Daughter hold so you can get an idea

and then guess what … I forgot to take a photo once it was finally turned but you sort of push the wooden dowel into the blue plastic piece and then you can pull it through with no problem … must remember to take a proper picture of this procedure … sorry!

Now for the fun part – filling those legs!

that skinny leg takes a LOT of stuffing!

Once stuffed Barbara then told me to tie off on the knee – to sew from back to front of knee and then tie the thread around the knee two to three times

And then it was all about stuffing the top bit of the legs.

Once stuffed, you then attach them to the back of the torso by machine – talk about looking like a frog!

and then you stitch by hand one side first so that you can fill the torso entirely and then you do the other side and “voila” her legs are now attached!

Fill her to the rim before you finish the other side

and this is where I’d had enough for the day – or to put it differently … this is when Mr. Hubby brought in the wine – and one should never drink and sew  - look at the mess of the table now (maybe Miss Kitchy had a sip of the wine because she looks like she’s had more than enough!) … oh well …

but see – wine is good for so many things – and will you LOOK at those legs … I love love love her already …

A Valentine Pinterest

It’s that time again …

It is Pinterest Friday – or if you are a hopeless romantic it is Valentines (real soon!).

So I thought todays post should be about Valentines

Except I really do not care for this Holiday – at all!

Mr. Hubby knows this – and won’t be getting me neither roses nor chocolate – ’cause he kind of knows I find it tacky. I’d much rather have chocolates any other day of the year – and tulips over roses … every time!

Anyhow – I decided I should check out IF it was possible to find anything on Pinterest under “Valentine” that I actually could say that I liked.

I found this

… and that was really it – I thought this would be cute for a class … fortunately I don’t think either of mine want to do Valentines this year – but if they do, maybe I’ll try to push this one on them!

From then on – I mean I did find things I liked on the Valentines search but every time it was more that it was Red & White that made me like it.

Being Danish, I love me some Red & White … our flag is like the most beautiful flag in the world!

Living in Canada … the Canadian flag is not far behind – and I love that I, on any given day will see a red/white flag waving in the wind – if I sort of squint and pretend real hard I can for a split second think I’m actually in Denmark …

Oh no – there I go again digressing … happens all the time these days …

So let’s get to it – let me show you some lovely Red & White things I found today while looking around!

See I wouldn’t need to only have this out for Valentines – I could easily look at this every day … year round – I have a serious love affair with mobiles!

I could totally see me doing something with this and giving it to my little peeps. Again – I would want them to know I love them year round and not just on Valentines … I’m all about telling them all the time!

… and just because I used to make a LOT of cakes … I thought I’d share this one with you because I think it is simple but very pretty!

Oh, and since we’re talking about cakes and all that – here are the cake pops I made for my 40th a little while back

and from the candy buffet …

…. mmmmm ….

I’m ALL about red boots – I love love love red shoes or boots … just absolutely love them.

Thing about red shoes/boots though – you HAVE to be in a mood to chat with people because it never fails. I put my red boots on and every one I bump into will comment on them – you cannot be in a bad mood with red footwear – I dare you to try it!

But I could certainly do with a new pair – and these would be just honky dory for this cold Canadian winter

but even better than me wearing red shoes or boots

there is N O T H I N G in this world that makes me smile more than a baby or a toddler with red shoes … absolutely nothing … it screams LOVE at me

with these I wish you a Happy Weekend – and if you’re all about the Valentines too – have a great Tuesday next week!
